Let Yourself be Changed

"The more you get to know people, the more they trust you to tell you their story. It is a gift. Every time somebody tells me their story they have given me something precious. And that cannot help but change me."

Michel Martin - NPR Journalist, Oct. 2014

While listening to the radio on a recent road trip, I heard Ms. Martin make this statement about why she loves her profession. I literally pulled over to the side of the road to write it down.

The need to build trusting relationships with our donors is critical to our work as ambassadors of our organizations. As donors put their trust in us, we can help them become ever better philanthropists.

But I love this quote because it speaks to what happens to us as we build trust with our donors. It is a huge part of where we get our personal satisfaction on the job. It is a gift to do this work - to be in intimate relationships with our donors.
